Pets are not only a lot of fun, but also a lot of worries. Removing a puddle behind your beloved cat is not so difficult, but this is where the problems only begin. How to get rid of the smell of cat urine in the apartment, which firmly eats into the carpet, furniture, decoration and things? We have collected 9 effective ways!
1. Act Immediately
Remove the puddle as soon as you notice, even if it's not the right time. The longer it remains uncleaned, the stronger the smell eats in and the sharper it becomes. It will be much more difficult to get rid of him later, and this will only stimulate the cats to repeat the "feat".
Wipe the puddle dry, but do not rub it over the surface, especially if it is carpet. Use wet wipes and dry rags, but try not to increase the area of the disaster.
2. Means with enzymes
Enzymes are a special enzyme similar in composition to proteins. They stimulate the natural chemical processes that take place in the body. In your case, after drying, enzyme products can completely destroy the smell.
Read the formulations: they don't have to be specialized products from pet stores. Normal household chemicals are enough, but use enzymes only if the stain has not been treated with any other substance before. Otherwise, the reaction may be unpredictable!
3. Special means to combat odors
Pet stores sell a variety of sprays, gels, and liquids to remove urine stains and odors. The manufacturer always indicates the features of the application and for which surfaces the composition is suitable. But do not forget that there is no magic pill for all troubles. Even so, you will most likely have to process the apartment several times and combine different methods.
4. Dishwashing liquid
Take a teaspoon of your dish soap and dilute it with 100 ml of peroxide. Such a mixture removes odors well on its own, and even better - paired with soda. But first test on an inconspicuous area to make sure the peroxide doesn't spoil the color of the finish.
5. Soda
If the stain is fresh and the smell is not yet too ingrained, cover it with baking soda, wait about an hour and remove. But if the stain is already old, you have to cheat! In the same way, cover the area with soda, fill it with ordinary hydrogen peroxide, leave it overnight - at least for 8 hours, and then wipe the surface with a wet rag or wash it if it is fabric or upholstered furniture.
During the manipulation, do not be alarmed when the smell intensifies. This is a temporary effect of ammonia release due to a chemical reaction. It will fade quickly.
6. Vinegar
It is a convenient option for carpets, sofas, mattresses and various floor coverings. Dilute vinegar with water 1: 3 and pour into a spray bottle, treat the surface and wait until it is completely dry, and then sprinkle some baking soda on top to neutralize the smell of the vinegar itself. You don't need water - wipe off the baking soda with a dry sponge or brush.
7. Alcohol or vodka
Alcohol not only removes odors, but also kills bacteria. This is the best household antiseptic. You only need a moistened sponge, you do not need to dilute vodka in water or mix with other components. The characteristic alcoholic smell will soon disappear by itself. Almost any surface can be treated with alcohol.
8. Citric acid
Lemon juice or dry acid sachets do a good job on stains and odors. It is not for nothing that most household fresheners and chemicals are all variants of "citrus freshness". Another plus is that cats dislike lemon scent and zest. Therefore, such treatment will additionally scare the pet away from the chosen place.
9. We remove the smell of cat urine from shoes and clothes
Soak clothing in hot water and baking soda, then wash thoroughly in fabric conditioner or rinse aid. Shoes are more difficult: try to gently wash them with laundry soap and dry them. And if you are afraid of ruining things, contact the dry cleaner - they have professional tools for any materials and problems.
